Water Issues

PRandPM

Dear Neighbor,
Our City Council grapples with the issue of lawsuit to resolve the water discharge issue. I understand the frustration that leads them to this desperate and very costly measure. Some argue a suit will not prevail. I'm no lawyer, but since we live in Florida, we unfortunately see a lot of lawyer commercials on television. I STRONGLY believe a suit is our only recourse. We are victims of a system that is destroying our way of life, our environment, and soon our property values. If that doesn't justify lawsuit, we don't need new causes, we need new LAWYERS.

I do not believe that Sanibel can shoulder the financial commitment of a suit. That is CLEARLY Lee County's job.

Others have asked me what can we do to impact this tragedy, and I will tell you that #1 is the upcoming County elections. Tammy Hall, campaign scandals aside, needs to be replaced by Andy Coy. Ms. Hall ran television commercials with SFWMD about their working together to bring us this wonderful system. She has adapted a wait and see attitude for the short term, and has accepted and endorsed CERP for the long term solution. Mr. Coy has made a strong statement where he stands on this issue. Please note the links at the bottom of this article with his and other candidates' positions.

C-43
The polluted water storage area, known as C-43, being constructed west of Lake Okeechobee is an 11,000 acre, $344 million admission from SFWMD that they have no intention of repairing the damage they've done to the Lake. It is proof that their avowed plan to eventually move water to the south, i.e. the sacred sugar plantations, is not going to happen. The giant bacteria and algae farm known as A-1 (their "flagship") is further proof.

We know this is correct because the plans are to create massive water storage areas to store backup irrigation water, since the lake is going to be kept at lower levels. It's necessary to maintain the lake at a lower level because of the threat to people south of the levee. The tradeoff for the lower lake while still guaranteeing irrigation water is huge polluted storage reservoirs. If there were any thought to restore the lake, rivers and estuaries, the plan would be to clean up the lake in preparation to moving water south where it SHOULD go, and where they now tell us it will eventually go. That is, if you are gullible enough to believe them again.

Are you aware that C-43 is anticipated to be so polluted that SFWMD is going to monitor the outcome of the reservoir for a year, and if it turns out to be not as nasty as expected, they might THEN go in and build some recreation facilities. This project is a prime example of what SFWMD does best, which is creating huge bodies of vile, polluted water. Doesn't that make your blood heat up a bit?

One thing you must credit the bureaucrats of SFWMD, they learn. In times past they constructed water systems that through abuse and mismanagement became polluted. Now they are more efficient, and are creating systems that are pre-polluted. Now that's a real timesaver, isn't it?

Solutions
Plan 6 or permutation
CERP (Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan) is no solution.

There are several alternatives that are cheaper, quicker, permanent, and fix the entire system.

They are not being considered for ONE reason.

They are not directly beneficial to the agricultural industry, for whom this whole system exists to placate.

On September 7, 2006 the Republican Club of Sanibel and Captiva has as its guest speaker, a spokesman for SFWMD. Time and location to be announced. If you think you might be interested in attending please click below and I will email you specifics.
