That was a brilliant lampoon written by “Mr. Weinheimer.” Imagine, laying out such egregious self serving arguments on behalf of “Big Sugar,” as if that—or any-- industry would be so shameless to make these arguments. (1) Declaring its product an essential food; now, the product of the devastated fishing industry is an essential food, sugar is an additive, not even necessary for coffee!! (2) The resultant destruction of internationally acclaimed ecosystems as in the national interest, because it keeps Cuba, Brazil, and Mexico from being our sugar supply; I bet we were all surprised that Mexico and Brazil were part of the axis of evil by having sugar prices lower than ours, whereas the sugar of the Dominican Republic, and other foreign sugar lands owned by international sugar companies with an American name, import product to take advantage of price supports. (3) Classifying those who use corn syrup as anti-american and those who use sweeteners as supporters of al Qaida; the greatest part of US Sugar production is NOT in southern Florida, and much isn’t even from sugar cane (sugar beets, in fact), so apparently Nebraska is also part of the axis of evil. (4) Declaring the importance of jobs as critical; specifically the jobs in health care and fitness, as Americans discover that many perceived healthy foods have been given an extra dose of “additive,” blowing their diets, their pancreas, and their cardiovascular system. (5) Linking those who pursue weapons of mass destruction and exporting terrorism with countries with lower sugar prices; …., well just read it again, what a brilliant lampoon.

In fact there is only one part of Mr Weinheimer’s satire with which I take exception. That is the thought that our great men and women (although in years they may be more classified as boys and girls) of our armed and peace services should be offering the whole of their future lives to protect us from sugar imports. The sacrifice they are making now is too great to be included in any farcical essay.
